The Walmart in New Richmond recently provided a generous grant to the Hammond Community Library worth $1792. This grant was written by the Friends of the Hammond Community Library, a nonprofit working to help the Hammond Community Library’s program. The grant enabled the Library to purchase almost one hundred items to start a Spanish/English collection that will help young learners study either English or Spanish. Some of these materials are being used in this year’s Summer Fun Camp. This new collection is part of the Hammond Community Library’s mission to be as inclusive and diverse as possible.
The Library purchased children’s bilingual books, games, and other learning tools, all designed to encourage learning English and Spanish in interesting ways. VOX books are included in the new collection. These are books that speak to the reader (in English and/or Spanish). The reader can listen while following the printed word and enjoying the illustrations. Another learning tool purchased with the Walmart grant is an Early Education Device, a small computer that will voice the name of and show the subject of each card as it is inserted. Many children have already enjoyed playing with these items and learned while they had fun.
The Hammond Community Library is very grateful to the Walmart in New Richmond for this grant that is helping the Library do so much to help the growing numbers of Spanish speaking members of our community. We will see the benefits of this donation for years to come and hope to expand the collection to include items for teenagers and adults. Anyone can check out these materials, and anything else in the Library’s vast collection of books, DVDs, oral books, e-books, art materials, and more. Just come by the Hammond Community Library at 850 Davis Street in Hammond, apply for a free library card, and start exploring.
